The Olympics just ended but you can still keep the spirit alive by listening to the official album for the Beijing Olympics. Remember the exciting Olympic moments with uplifting power ballads, such as ``That's My Goal'' by Shayne Ward and ``Us Against the World'' by Westlife, and perky dance numbers like ``Take You There'' by Sean Kingston and ``Dream Catch Me'' by Newton Faulkner.

Overall, many of the songs will still be worth listening to long after the Olympic memories have faded. Except maybe for ``Light the Passion Share the Dream'' (sung by the contestants of Miss World 2008) and ``China World,'' which grates on the ears with the chorus ``Beijing Olympic Games will be great.''

Westlife, the best Irish boyband
by Nat on 26 Aug 2008 • DISCUSS ON FORUM
By Maureen Coleman

Westlife have been voted the fourth best boy band ever, beating fellow Irish group Boyzone by two places in the poll.

The two bands, both formed by pop svengali Louis Walsh, feature in an online survey to find the world’s top 10 boy bands, dating back as far as the 1960s.

Surprisingly, the Beatles only manage second place in the list, trailing behind the recently reformed Take That, who were named the greatest boy band ever.

The Beatles are considered by many pop commentators as the original boy band but were still pipped to the post by Take That.

The Jackson Five, with hits like I’ll Be There and I Want You Back, came third in the survey carried out by website onepoll.com.

American 60s band The Monkees, who had their own television show, came fifth, one behind Westlife, while the Bee Gees were seventh, just beaten by Boyzone.

Backstreet Boys, New Kids On The Block and The Osmonds made up the final three places in the top 10.

Up to 5,000 music fans were surveyed for the poll.

Westlife were formed in 1998 in Dublin by Walsh, who was already enjoying success at the time with Boyzone.

Originally a five-piece, the band became four after Brian McFadden quit in 2004.

Westlife celebrated their 10th anniversary this year and are still going strong, with album sales of over 40 million worldwide, 14 number one singles and numerous awards.

Boyzone split in 2000 after seven years together. Last year they became the latest band to re-form and kicked off their Reunion Tour at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast.

Take That were one of the most successful pop acts in the world during the 1990s, but split at the height of their fame in 1996 not long after the departure of Robbie Williams.

News of their reunion was greeted with much hysteria in 2006 and their comeback single Patience reached number one, as did their album Beautiful World.

The band went on to win a prestigious Brit Award in 2007 for Patience and in 2008, they took home two more for Best Live Act and Best British Single.

A spokesperson for onepoll.com said that he wasn’t surprised at their top spot in the survey.

“This has to be down to their amazing comeback,” he said.

Meanwhile, a host of boy bands failed to make it into the top 10 including award-winning McFly, Busted, Blazin Squad and also Blue.

Billie Jean - Michael Jackson (a song loved by all the lads and to get the playlist off to a good start)
Let's Get It Started - Black Eyed Peas (a great song to get all the lads started partying)
Sweet Child Of Mine - Guns n Roses (classic rock type song for Kian)
Survivor - Destiny's Child (important song for me as I have went through a lot and I'm still achieving my dreams, the same as Westlife 10 years)
Sexy Back - Justin Timberlake (For Nicky to get his groove on lol)
Hero - Mariah Carey (One of Mark's most loved songs)
Don't Stop ‘Til You Get Enough - Michael Jackson (for Shane to attempt his Jackson dancing skills lol)
Celebration - Kool and the Gang (to celebrate 10 years)

Shane Gillian4ever

Savage Garden - I Knew I loved You Before I Met You
It's a beautiful song & one of my all time favourites, it always reminds me of some wonderful Westlife memories with them and with friends
Lonestar - Amazed
Such a beautiful beautiful song, a friend of mine introduced me to it about 6 years ago, just before Shane's wedding, and it's defenitely a favourite. And that should be dedicated to Shane & Gillian as it's 'their' song
Westlife - You Raise Me Up
This always makes me think about my family and my loved ones who have sadly enough passed away. It's such a beautiful song with a thousand meanings
Stevie Wonder & others - That's What Friends Are For
An amazing song that means a lot to me. And I would love to dedicate this to the lads as they gave me 4 best friends in the world and I wouldn't know where I'd be without them!
Bon Jovi - Livin' On A Prayer
Such a good warming up song for a concert. I just get into the mood (not that I wouldn't be anyway) and it's one of those songs you just gotta sing along to, and it's of course one of Kian's favourite bands
Michael Jackson - Billie Jean
You just can't forgot Michael with 2 massive fans in the band. He's a great singer / entertainer and I defenitely loved their performance of Billie Jean in 2006
Bryan Adams - Everything I Do, I Do It For You
Beautiful classic song that everyone can sing along to. And I know I the lads love it too. And yes it sounds cheesy, but everything I do, I do it for them. Well not everything, but I've travelled to the UK, Germany & Ireland just for them...
Elton John - I'm Still Standin'
I don't think this needs any explaination. Pure Westlife when it comes to the lyrics. Ha, they can scream this off the roof tops after 10 years at the top and you know, laugh best who laughs last!
Prince - Kiss
I gotta mention this one, because when I heard the first few lines for this on the Greatest Hits tour I was convinced it was just Prince singing that and my chin hit the ground when I noticed it was actually Mark. His best performance ever!
Elvis Costello - She
This has a very special meaning to me since my cousin's wedding. And I think this is how every man should feel about their wives/girlfriends. So lads, this is for your girls!

schneckelchen19

Don McLean - American Pie ( a great song to dance and to sing along)
James Blunt - 1973 (a beautiful song to relax and to think of great moments with people you love)
Kid Rock - All Summer Long ( it reminds me of all these great parties that I've celebrated a short time ago because I've passed my school- leaving. It's the perfect song to make party all night long! )
Two Is One - Never Give Up (it should remind Westlife to never give up their dreams)
Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares To You ( yes, Westlife are unique! The lads should know that)
Timbaland featuring Keri Hilson - The Way I Are (the favourite song of me and my boyfriend)
Bryan Adams - Summer Of ´69 ( for the lads; to think of the passed time with so many amazing concerts -especially Croke Park- and such a big success during the last 10 years!...)
Seeed - Aufstehn ( a good song for the guys to learn a little bit German. So they have to do something if their break gets boring)

GERRY AND THE PACEMAKERS - You'll Never Walk Alone (this song means a lot to me sending a shiver down my spine. To start off with I am a big Liverpool fan. It sends a message to me saying that even when times are hard don't give up. You may feel alone but you are never alone. At the end of it all will be something positive)
WESTLIFE - Flying Without Wings (An absolute CLASSIC! I believe the lads love singing it on tour as they can relate to it 'Some find it in the face of their children, Some find it in their lovers eyes'. It also reminds me of what's missing in my life and what is needed to make it complete!)

Westlife raise up their story

WESTLIFE: OUR STORY
By Westlife and Mark Roach

HarperCollins, €22.99

For the past couple of weeks, the No 1 position in the Non-Fiction Bestsellers chart in Britain has been occupied by the Westlife autobiography. It knocked Jordan's Pushed to the Limit off the top spot, no mean feat. So it's a huge seller, both in Britain and here, whatever any critic might say. But the question remains, is it any good?

Well, given that this is billed as Westlife in their own words, the clean-cut quartet are actually quite forthcoming in their revelations. We learn of excess cursing, excess boozing and even one member throwing up in a strategically-placed bucket just before going on stage, so bad was his hangover.

So far, so promising, but the disadvantage of this being an official biography means that Westlife can leave out and leave in exactly what they want to. Hence there are no revelations on groupies or any other very bad behaviour. The old motto of "what happens on the road, stays on the road" obviously prevails here.

There is hardly any mention of sex (except when Mark steps gaily out of the closet, new boyfriend Kevin in hand), hardly any drugs (Mark was once offered coke in London's Met Bar but turned it down) and as for rock 'n' roll? Forget it.

Written in a chatty, easy style, it moves along swiftly with passages from Nicky, Kian, Mark and Shane. So just when you're getting bored with one, another comes along with a fresh story about their struggle to get to the toppermost of the poppermost and how to stay there.

It kicks off with Kian, Mark and Shane growing up in Sligo and how they were forced to ditch two close childhood pals from the original line-up.

But the wailing and gnashing of teeth soon passes. At the same time, Nicky Byrne was back in Dublin cooling his heels after being rejected by Leeds United as a goalkeeper because he failed to gain the required extra few inches in his late teens. Girlfriend Georgina Ahern heard how Louis Walsh was looking for two new members for a boy band he was putting together. She encouraged him to apply and he got the job, as did fellow Dubliner, Brian McFadden.

It's all here in minute detail, just about everything every Westlife fan could want to know, from the birth of Shane and Nicky's babies, to Nicky crying when Mark revealed he was gay to Kian getting slightly carried away when Louis appointed him the contact person in the band and something akin to being their spokesman.

But while Louis guided the boy band to unbelievable fame and fortune, it wasn't without some big bumps and huge hiccups along the way. Kian revealed:

"He's quit as our manager on more than one occasion. I remember one of the first times was when we all turned up late for a meeting in Sweden. He told us: 'You were like a bunch of spoilt kids on the plane on the way over. You all arrived down here in dribs and drabs. You don't realise what you have. Your attitude stinks.' We managed to apologise to him, but it was quite a scare."

There was more trouble when Ronan Keating -- then co-managing the band -- told Louis how Westlife had snubbed fans at an airport, refusing to sign autographs. Cue another lecture and threats of resignation by big boss, Louis. But it too was smoothed over and, not surprisingly, Ronan the Snitch was soon no longer involved in co-managing them!

Each band member shares a selection of personal photographs from their youth right up to the present day. After 10 years at the top Westlife have no intentions of calling it a day and are expected to get back together again early in 2009 to begin picking songs for a new album.

All four members emerge well from the book, coming across as likeable enough young guys who got extremely lucky -- and know it. Some egos became seriously over-sized as the band's initial success kicked in, but they were soon cut down to size. But, whatever else, they have been well-groomed by Walsh to appreciate what they have and to be nice to the people they've met on the way up.

While the book certainly won't win any major prizes for literature, it has been enthusiastically received by fans, knocking Jordan's latest off the top of the best-sellers chart in Britain. But, for some reason, it hasn't topped the Irish book charts.

While it also won't win over any new converts to their rather bland, ballad-based and anodyne music, Westlife -- Our Story is just what the fans ordered to see them through those long, lonely months while the band take a well-deserved break from their always hectic schedule. This one will sell and sell.

Bless who would have thought these four irish little cherubs would grow up to be in one of the biggest boybands, of all times - and adored by millions of teenage girls.

We are loving the schoolboy, pics of Nicky Byrne(29), Shane Filan(29),Mark Feehily(28) with their matching pudding bowl haircuts. Kian Egan(29)meanwhile was already showing a flair for dapper dressing, in his bow tie and jacket. And we have suspected for a while that Kian is not a natural blonde.

We cany help but think that the youngters smiles would have been if they had an idea what ahuge sucess they would become in the future.

And on things fro sure, with that cheeky charm, and adorable chins have not changed one bit.

Get the chips in, Tony lad
by Nat on 03 Jul 2008 • DISCUSS ON FORUM
by Dawn Collinson, Liverpool Echo

WESTLIFE celebrated the end of their successful UK tour with a big night out in Liverpool, but the lads proved they’re not all about the caviar lifestyle.

When the munchies struck, Insider hears the Irish lads had a special request for one of the bar staff at Kingdom – for a Chinese takeaway!

Tony Mahoney duly obliged, nipping out to Victoria Street and returning laden down with cartons and carrier bags full of Chinese food for the hungry band, who rewarded him with a hefty tip.

The banquet rounded off a great night for Westlife who, together with their other halves, headed to the VIP area of Kingdom after their Summer Pops gig.

The boy band, who recently performed at the Rooney wedding, attracted large crowds as word got out the lads were out on the lash.

But it wasn’t just the fans who were pleased to see the boys in Liverpool – the four-piece and their partners couldn’t have been happier to be back.

Former Hollyoaks’ actress and ex-girl band singer Jodi Albert, who is engaged to Westlife star Kian Egan, told Insider: “We love coming back to Liverpool. The fans here are fantastic and the band always gets the biggest reception.

“All the boys were really excited to be back. Kian and I spend a lot of time in the city and whenever we come back it makes me miss it.

“This was the last show of the current tour before they take a year out, so we all planned to celebrate with a big night out.”

Mat Cunningham from Kingdom says security was increased for the group’s visit.

“We got a call from the band's manager to say Kingdom had been recommended and Westlife wanted to come here to celebrate 10 years together and announce they are having a break.

“While most of the group sipped on our most expensive champagne, the ladies specifically asked for Cosmopolitans. At around 1am the ladies asked us to bring out the cake that they had made for Mark, Shane, Kian and Nicky, which was a chocolate sponge with a number 10 on the top. We put some sparklers on it and they presented to them as a surprise. It was a fantastic moment."
