Westlife On TV3 - New Zealand
by Villy on 13 Nov 2007 • DISCUSS ON FORUM
There was a Westlife interview on New Zealand's TV3 Channel and Jess typed up a transcript of it. Thank you so much Jess. Also, Westlife's album 'Back Home' in No.13 in the New Zealand's albums chart. Hopefully it will go higher in the chart.

(started with a clip of WYLLT from the Live at Wembley DVD)

Kian: You look at all the other bands that were doing the same type of things that we were doing, like Take That and Boyzone, and it was very typical that you had your three albums, a Greatest Hits album, and that was it; it was all over for every pop group. When we started off, we always did want to get past that and be the first ones who were not going to be the stereo typical band, that gets, you know, to their Greatest Hits and breaks up, and just fall apart, and one or two try to go solo. And we pushed through that.
Nicky: We’ve done a lot of things that people will never get to do in their life, and seen so many places so many times. But at the same time, we’ve missed out on so many things. You have the drinking night, the mad night out, you know, all of that. But I suppose we just did it a lot differently and, no regrets, you know, it’s been an amazing ten years.

(clip of the Home video, talking about getting to 14 number ones)

Mark: I don’t know anybody who doesn’t strive to be the best or be at the top of their game, and for us, especially in the mainstream pop market, and I think that every pop act that releases, their ideal situation would be number one.

Interviewer: How many do you have to get before you beat Elvis and The Beatles?
Shane: I think it’s 20. I think Elvis is either 18 or 19, um, so you know it would be great to do that obviously. Obviously we’re not going to change music like Elvis and The Beatles did, that was a different story altogether, but it’s the only record that we can have on our own, and it’s the one we’re closest to, and one we’d be very proud of.

(clip of Flying without Wings video, talking about we’re they’ve come from)

Nicky: We’re being put into all these clothes by the record company, and we were making all these videos, and you’re becoming a “popstar” if you like, but you’re not really. You’re not comfortable with it.

Interviewer mentions something about cheesy videos.

Nicky: You know, the song is great! But the video … oh my god! We had no shoes and socks on us; you know, we do this twirl where we go from black, and all of a sudden it’s white clothes, and our eyes have been digitally enhanced to make them like bluer than blue!

(clip from Live at Wembley again while interviewer mentions something about the Spice Girls)

Interviewer: Talking about the Spice Girls, what’s going on there at the moment?
Kian: We hate them!

Nicky: We’re broken up with them!
Mark: To be honest, about 8 years ago, there was a big like chart battle and that’s probably why … cause we are releasing albums around the same time again, people are thinking its all going to happen again. And it’s the type of situation that could get out of hand easy, you know, and someone could say one thing, and it just all build up and everyone would be like at war.
Shane: You always see bands that are less successful than us have a pop at us! And that’s usually what it is, you know; it’s bands that are maybe need a plug for their single, or a plug for their album, or literally … just sell less, sell less tickets … I don’t understand how we do it!

(clip from The Rose, talking about cheap shots about their videos, singing ability or dance moves)

Interviewer: There’s actually very little dirt. You guys haven’t been to rehab … as far as I know! You haven’t gone out without your knickers on …
Mark: They tried to make us go!
Nicky: We have actually … I’ve gone out without …
Shane: Yeah, so did I actually. I went on TV actually once without any underwear on, because I had to! And you could actually slightly see through my trousers!
Kian: We’re four normal guys. We go out on the razzle dazzle on the weekend, you know, we get in fights, we get in arguments, we kill each other, we love each other, but I think its … the biggest misconception is that we’re boring guys!
Nicky: … and we have small willies, cause we don’t!
Shane: *with fist raised* Got big willies!

Interviewer closes with: Lucky we cleared that up!

Westlife Head Back Home In Good Company As First-week Sales Impress
by Villy on 12 Nov 2007 • DISCUSS ON FORUM
by Alan Jones

With album sales increasing for the third week in a row, every album in the Top 10 of the artist albums chart sold more than 20,000 copies last week. Although the new number one, Back Home, opened with one of the lower totals of Westlife’s career, its tally of 132,315 was the fifth highest of the year, trailing only the first-week tallies of the latest albums by Arctic Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs, Foo Fighters and the Eagles’ Long Road Out Of Eden, which opened with a slightly higher sale of 134,080 last week. Now at number two, the Eagles’ album had another good week, shifting a further 81,781 copies - the second-best figure for a number two album this year. The Wombats, Blake and Murray Gold are a diverse trio of recording acts, and all make their first album chart appearance this week. The Wombats’ quirky rock/pop style has brought them success with singles Kill The Director (number 35) and Let’s Dance To Joy Division (15) in recent weeks, and their first album, A Guide To Love, Loss & Desperation builds on their success to debut at number 11 on sales of 19,892; Blake are a classical crossover quartet, whose selftitled debut album includes versions of Moon River and Paul McCartney’s Celebration. It debuts at 18 on sales of 16,143; Murray Gold’s incidental music for series three of Doctor Who has been highly acclaimed, and sold 3,126 copies last week to debut at number 65.

Number One Album Westlife (S)

Westlife’s ninth album, Back Home, provides the Irish band with their seventh number one, with firstweek sales of 132,315. Of the Irish group’s previous chart-toppers, The Love Album (2006) sold 219,662, Turnaround (2003) sold 154,169, Unbreakable (2002) sold 187,940, Coast To Coast (2001) sold 234,767 and World Of Our Own (2000) sold 178,106 on their first week of release. Westlife’s 1999 self-titled debut opened at number two with 83,053 sales and Allow Us To Be Frank (2004) debuted at number three with sales of 91,523.
