Christmas Party and a half
by Nat on 15 Dec 2007 • DISCUSS ON FORUM

CAN you imagine the likes of Westlife, McFly AND Billy Ocean all turning up to perform at your office Christmas do? Those lucky old chaps at GMG Radio got the surprise of their life when this lot - and more - turned up at their annual festive bash at Manchester's Palace Hotel.

The national radio group - which includes Manchester's Century FM and Smooth Radio - have got the right music biz contacts I suppose. But it was still pretty impressive to have this llittle lot assembled all to entertain you as you munch on your turkey dinner.

Westlife were in good voice - belting out their hit Home before jetting off to their next engagement. And McFly were even better, singing acoustic versions of All About You and Five Colours in Her Hair - although they did admit they felt a little under-dressed amid the glamorous black-tie get-up of revellers.

The Westlife Show: Live
by Nat on 15 Dec 2007 • DISCUSS ON FORUM
Saturday 15 December 2007 6:15pm - 7:15pm on ITV1.

After 14 UK number ones and 36 million record sales worldwide, the biggest selling pop act of the last nine years, Westlife, are treating their fans to a one-off musical extravaganza, The Westlife Show: Live, exclusively for ITV1

The Westlife Show: Live is a colourful celebration of the band's hits spanning their record-breaking career. Of the tracks Shane, Kian, Mark and Nicky sing on the night, five will be the top tracks voted for online ahead of the show from a selection of Westlife's classic number ones.

Which of their classic hits will make the top 5? Flying Without Wings, Mandy, World Of Our Own, My Love, Unbreakable, You Raise Me Up...?

This live show is to be hosted by Holly Willoughby and in addition to the classics Westlife will be performing exclusive material from their new No.1 album, Back Home, and there'll also be some extra special guests, as well as some surprises in store.

Westlife member Shane says: "We're very excited and thrilled to have our own TV special. We've seen so many amazing TV specials over the years on ITV1 so it's an honour to finally have our own".

Surprises

Kian continues: "There'll be lots of our biggest hits plus new songs from the new album Back Home. Also, there'll be a couple of really good surprises which we can't reveal yet. Fans will also have had chance to choose some of the songs we perform, which is best bit about the show really".

When asked if they still get a buzz from performing in front of an audience, Shane says: "Yes, especially if it's a live TV show like this one, it's even more exciting then."

Kian continues, "The audience is going to be made up of our biggest fans, so it's going to be quite a spectacle".

If they had to pick one of their number 1 hits to perform on the night, Shane plumps for "You Raise Me Up. Every time we sing it we never get sick of it".

Kian says that the highlight of his career so far is "still being together after nearly ten years. We are very proud of that".

Shane puts the key to Westlife's success down to "Great songs, hard work and honesty within the band and the people we work with".

Westlife Update
by Nat on 15 Dec 2007 • DISCUSS ON FORUM
The boys have been manically busy with rehearsals over the last few weeks so that they can put together the best possible show for everyone tomorrow.

And there's no time to rest after the ITV show, as they'll be recording their performance for BBC One's New Year's Eve special The Big Finish, hosted by Graham Norton, on Sunday. Then on Monday the boys will be shooting the video for their third single - watch this space for more details on that one.

Tuesday will see them getting on a plane back to Ireland in preparation for recording the Late Late Show Westlife Special on Friday 21st, which will be broadcast the following Friday. After that they'll be taking a well-earned rest over Christmas and New Year to spend time relaxing with their nearest and dearest.

It's back to work in mid-January when they'll be starting some international promotion, then recording an exclusive performance for the ultra-prestigious South Bank Show awards on 29th January. And on 30th January, rehearsals begin in earnest for the 2008 tour!

That's Westlife!
by Villy on 13 Dec 2007 • DISCUSS ON FORUM
Ten years on and Westlife are still dominating the charts worldwide. The Irish foursome tell Janice Butler about the honour of having a Late Late Show dedicated to them and why they’ll be going home for Christmas

It’s Friday night in RTE and that can mean only one thing: The Late Late Show. The corridors are full of excited audience members and anxious music reps. Die-hard Westlife fans stretch themselves on the walls surrounding the studios, hoping to catch a glimpse of the idols. And then these four overzealous boys, or should I say mean - Kian Egan, Shane Filan, Nicky Byrne and Mark Feehily - come bouncing into their dressing room, clearly ecstatic to be launching their eighth studio album, Back Home, to their faithful Irish fan base.

Its hard to believe that it’s been ten years since Westlife invaded the pop world. “We started off the band when we were just seventeen and here we are ten years later, still doing it,” says Kian with a grin. “We’ve never done anything else outside of Westlife beside going to school.”

Now, after eight studio albums and fourteen number ones - and with the departure of Brian McFadden along the way - they credit one man for their continued success. “Louis has been such a big part of our career. Without him I don’t think we would still be together. He has kept us grounded and we never want to let him down,” says Shane speaking, of course, of the band’s manager and mentor Louis Walsh.

Kian adds: “His opinion means so much to us. We look at him as the man who brought us to where we are today. We know if we didn’t have him we wouldn’t be doing it. He is very honest manager, who tells it like it is regardless of whether we want to hear it or not.”

As we talk, the Westlife lads are reminded that they only have fifteen minutes until they take to The Late Late Show stage. This is certainly not their first time to sit on the sofa opposite Pat Kenny, but the experience can still can still cause sweaty palms and calls for a stiff drink! “ I have always been absolutely terrified on the Late Late,” confess Mark, surprisingly. “We have done every TV and public appearance that you can think of over the years but there’s something about sitting on that sofa, on the set, in front of Pat Kenny - it blows my head off. It’s probably because I know my two nans are watching!”

If that really is true, then Mark has reasons to be fearful again because Westlife are making an extra special The Late Late Show appearance on December 28 when they will be reminiscing about their decade at the top... and it wouldn’t be a Christmas without some surprises in the mix.

The honour of having Late Late Show special dedicated to the band isn’t lost on them all. “It’s going to be a really great night,” says Shane. “It will go back to when we started with footage from when we were younger. We’ll do about seven or eight of the biggest hits we’ve had and there will be a few guest stars coming on. We will probably do a duet or two with some Irish singers.”

Mark reveals: “ We have some great ideas for the show, and I don’t want to give away too much, but if what we planned is pulled off it will be something pretty sensational. You need to have some sort of twist to it. So we had a meeting with the show’s producer and started coming up with ideas. Most will probably be impossible to achieve. But as long as we get the one little thing that makes it different - that’s what we are looking for.”

The show will conclude a spectacular year for the boys, especially on the home front. Nicky has clearly embraced his new role as a father of two adorable twins boys, Rocco and Jay. “They are so cute, they melt my heart,” beams the proud father. And Christmas 2007 is going to be extra special in the Byrne household. “I am really excited about Christmas this year. This will be our first with Santa Claus coming to the house. I think anyone who lives away from home for long periods loves the build-up, knowing that you are going to be with your family. We see Christmas as the light at the end of the tunnel. We will have a big dinner at our house, the whole family is coming over. And my sister is pregnant as well - so that will be another new arrival to look forward to.”

With the album release occupying so much of his time, how has Nicky dealt with being away from his twins? “They travel everywhere with me and Georgina,” he responds. “I don’t want to travel around the world and not have them with me. I am in a lucky position that I can have them with me 99 per cent of the time.

“Don’t get me wrong, having a baby is tough, and especially with twins. There are sleepless nights and you feel like you have a baby in our arms twenty-four-seven, but they have truly completed my life.”

And how has his father-in-law, An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, taken to becoming a grandfather for the first time? “Everyone has been fantastic,” says Nicky. “Georgina’s dad has been great and her mum Miriam has been living with us for the last few months, so that has been a huge help.”

While Nicky will be enjoying the holiday in the capital, the other boys will be heading west to Sligo to spread some festive cheer there.

Kian laughs: “Christmas time is always about being in Ireland and being back with our families. We spend so much time away leading up to Christmas with all the promotional work, by the time it’s all finished we are just ready to turn off and go back home. Our lives in Ireland are very normal, you don’t kit up in Dolce & Gabbana gear going to the pub.”

Mark says: “Over Christmas, I will either be in Sligo or in Newcastle where Kevin, my partner, is from. Last year both of us went to our own individual families, so we will probably do the same this year and then meet up on Boxing Day... I mean St. Stephen’s Day. I’ve been spending too much time in England!”

Shane says of his two-year-old daughter Nicole: “She is getting the hang of Christmas and the whole idea of Santa Claus. She loves opening presents; she doesn’t even know what’s in them half of the time. It’s not about how expensive the gifts are. As long as there are a few small things she can tear open on Christmas morning, she’ll be happy.”

And with that, time is called, and the boys tumble out of the dressing room, sprucing themselves up before their date with Pat. But before they go there’s time for one last question: What do you get four men who have everything for Christmas?

“A set of golf balls or white socks,” laughs Nicky, displaying his trademark cheeky grin. “I tell my family and friends to just make me something - it's more personal,” says Mark, clearly content with just being home
