Getting up close with Westlife
By Phil Crossey
What better way to celebrate Valentine's Day than snuggling up on the sofa tonight with Westlife?
Not to mention our very own Phil Crossey, just one of the media experts talking about just why the band are so popular.
Shane, Mark, Kian and Nicky join presenter John Kearns in a special up close and personal UTV documentary - Westlife Back Home - at 7.30pm tonight, celebrating 10 years of Westlife, ahead of their return to play to three sold out concerts in Belfast this month.
Speaking fondly of their Northern fans, Shane says that Northern Ireland fans are "crazy", but that they've supported them from day one and are probably "the most loyal fanbase in the world".
And Taoiseach Bertie Ahern says that when the band started out, "the people in the North took to them and they took to the people in the North; they love going back".
Nicky admits that there's something about Belfast fans that gives him goosebumps, and that there's always pandemonium when Westlife go to Belfast, making Northern Ireland fans distinctive from those across the world. Nicky also reveals that he enjoys hearing fans standing outside the band's Belfast hotel after a concert at 4am still singing World Of Our Own.
And Shane confesses that if he was planning a night out, he'd probably go to Belfast before he'd take the boys to Dublin.
They talk to John about starting out in 1998 and their first ever number one Swear It Again and Shane reveals that they knew they had to be different from the other boy bands. Simon Cowell admits that when he first saw the band, he knew within 30 seconds that he was going to sign them.
Record of the Year winning Flying Without Wings is Bertie Ahern's favourite Westlife song and Shane says it's probably the best song of their career.
They do, however, admit that You Raise Me Up was
most likely the song that saved their career, which some thought was on the wane at that stage.
Mark says: "It brought us right back up to the very top," while Shane says: "It changed our career."
They speak of Brian's much publicised departure and Kian admits that he should never have cried at the press conference announcing Brian was to leave the band but he says he thought the band was over.
Shane says that after releasing their current album Back Home, they'll be taking a year off for the first time in 10 years, but Nicky adds: "We want to stay around a long time and conquer the world as a pop band."
Westlife Back Home includes a host of commentators from the local media who have contributed in some way to the band's immense popularity, although some are bigger fans than others!
n Westlife Back Home is on UTV tonight at 7.30pm and repeated on Sunday at 5.25pm.

Today's Daily Star
Westlife are swapping their trademark suits for motorcycling leathers in the promo for new single Us Against The World.
A source said: "The lads wanted a tougher image for their new video and turned to bikers' favourites Hein Gericke for advice on how to look the part."
"They ordered a wide variety of authentic kit and jet black helmets."
Racy stuff."
The tune is released on February 25, the same day their Back Home tour kicks off.

Westlife Interview In Woman Magazine
WE'VE GOT MALE!WOMAN gets up close and personal as Westlife answer your questions
This year, Valentine's Day is likely to be quiet for the Westlife boys - Shane Filan, 28, Nicky Byrne, 29, Mark Feehily, 27, and Kian Egan, 27 - as they are busy rehearsing for their Back Home arena tour.
Shane and his wife Gillian will be having a night in with their daughter Nicole, two, while Nicky and his wife Georgina will no doubt be busy with nine-month-old twins Rocco and Jay. Mark will be cooking a roast dinner for his boyfriend Kevin McDaid, and Kian wants a romantic meal with his fiancee, actress Jodi Albert.
But the boys have still found time to open their hearts and answer all the romantic questions WOMAN readers posed to them.
Kian, were you very nervous about proposing to Jodi last Christmas?Victoria Hart, Preston, Lancs.
Kian: Yes, I kept thinking how I only ever want to ask that question once! But even though I was nervous, I really did enjoy doing it because I knew Jodi was not going to say no! The wedding will be sometime in 2009.
If you could relive a romantic moment in your life, what would it be and why?Catherine Hiscoke, Plymouth, Devon.
Shane: It's got to be either my wedding day or the day our daughter Nicole was born. Gillian and I were friends for years before we started dating, but it didn't take long for me to realise that I didn't want to be with anyone else. I know that Gillian loved me before the band, before the money or fame.
Mark: will you tie the knot with your boyfriend Kevin?Carmel Flood, Byfleet, Surrey.
Mark: We've no plans just now, but if and when it happens, it will be a big craic. Kevin's really been embraced by our fans - he even gets his own fan mail!
How do your partners feel about the attention you get?Eleanor Mulligan, South London.
Nicky: Georgina's absolutely fine with it but I really hate it when we're out together and a group of girls come up to me and then act like Georgina's not there. But she just laughs about it and sings that old Carpenters song Close To You that goes, 'Why do birds suddenly appear…' That's her little joke.
Has anyone had a stalker?Ros Howard, Bisly, Surrey.
Kian: We all have but I had one from Switzerland and she'd follow us all around Europe when we were on tour, giving me letters saying she loved me. The next thing I know, she's moved to my hometown in Ireland and she still lives there!
Who gets the dirtiest fan mail?Elaine Fitzgerald, Portsmouth, Hants.
Mark: One fan sent me a DVD of her having sex with her boyfriend and I have also been sent used sex toys, I open my post with Marigolds on these days.
Nicky, when did you realise Georgina was the one?Sally Joyce, Watford, Hertfordshire.
Nicky: This sounds corny, but I remember coming home from school when I was 14 and saying to my mum: 'I've seen the girl I'm going to marry'.
Shane, Kian and Mark: Aahh!
What food would you give to seduce someone?June O'Dell, Bath, Somerset.
Shane: I just give Gillian a hot chocolate with marshmallow!
Kian: You need to be more adventurous than that! I'd make a chilli so hot that Jodi would have to start unpeeling her layers…
What do you wear in bed?Angela Caine, Glasgow
Mark: Depends on my mood!
Kian: Just my undies
Shane: Usually boxer shorts and a T-shirt, I don't like wearing too much.
Nicky: Nothing!
